Every year, after a long, cold winter, the trees in South Korea wake up and explode with fragrant pink and white cherry blossoms. You can see cherry blossoms all over the country, but the city of Jinhae is the most famous place to see them. There’s no better way to experience cherry blossom season than by going to the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival.
There are no set dates for the festival as it all depends on when the trees bloom, but it’s usually held at the end of March and the beginning of April and goes on for several weeks until the blossoms are gone.
The Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is a city wide event. Everywhere you go there will be tents and vendors and performances. The thing I love about festivals in Asia is you never know what weird, random things you’ll find. You can buy framed pictures…
…or Peruvian flutes.Hungry? How about some cherry blossom ice cream? Free samples! The best way to experience the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is to just wander around the city. No matter where you go, you will find beautiful scenery and stunning trees.I loved seeing all the families out together at the festival. There were families everywhere, picnicking and taking horse drawn carriage rides around town. While there is certainly no bad place to see the cherry blossoms, there is one area of Jinhae which is the most famous and it’s called Yeojwacheon Stream on ‘Cherry Blossom Road’ (여좌천-벚꽃명소) It’s always extremely crowded, but that’s because nothing is more beautiful than this area (and probably also because a K-drama was filmed here).Jinhae was so beautiful I never wanted to leave. At least the walk back to the train station was scenic.
Getting there: From Seoul: Take the train to Changwon/Masan Station, then transfer to the train that stops at Jinhae Station. If you’re coming from another city, check the Korail website for routes and schedules. You can also take intercity buses from most cities in Korea to Jinhae.
Currency: South Korea’s currency is the Korean Won.
Language: The official language in South Korea is Korean, although many younger Koreans have at least a basic knowledge of English. In bigger cities, hotels, airports and train stations you will almost certainly be able to find someone who speaks English.
When to go: Cherry blossom season can be unpredictable, but they usually bloom from late March through mid-April.
Have you ever been to the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival, or another cherry blossom festival?
